Love vs. Porn

Best admired with Kevin Drew’s Love vs. Porn

My all time favorite neoclassical painting is the Grande Odalisque by Ingres. If you’re not familiar to it, might I suggest you pay closer attention to this blog’s background image. That’s the Grande Odalisque. I first saw it with my own eyes in 2006 at le Louvre, and became utterly captivated by it. It’s a gorgeous painting. I’m not a keen fan of neoclassical painting or romanticism. I prefer modern art. This one, on the other hand, stood out. There is a modern popart alteration of the painting at Centre Pompidou, that I love too. It’s a painting that literally pops out. Well worth a visit, just to get a feel of the intensity of the colors. So if you’re ever in Paris, these (and d’Orsay) are your must see museums.

Tribute to Ingres by Martial Raysse

Probably a year ago, I was looking for good desktop image. I had usually been with naive cartoons, like a hand-drawn dinosaur running Godzilla-like down the standard Windows XP desktop image or the latest Wulffmorgenthaler wallpaper. I decided to change for something more grown-up. I decided, since boys can have half naked girls on their screens, why couldn’t I? I preferred something tasteful, not your run of the mill IceQueen model posing awkwardly with their fanny up in the air. What a better candidate than the Grande Odalisque? I’ve had it on all of my computers for almost a year, and I have still not grown tired of it. It’s that good. I have had some awkward moments when men first see my desktop image, astonished I have a half-naked woman on my screen. Women don’t generally voice any opinions. Don’t ask me why.

When I have google-imaged this painting, I have come across other tributes. Most not coming close the grandeur of the original. There are however two versions I like, first being Raysse’s popart (see above), and the second being Michael Thompson’s spread for Vanity Fair from 2000 (see below). Subtle as the painting, yet in vivid detail. Absolutely breathtaking.

Julianne Moore as Ingres’ Grande Odalisque by Michael Thompson
When I grow up (read: get fitter or more confident in sporting half-naked in front of the general public) I want one to call my own. Just need to find a gifted photographer that can make me as beautiful. Delusional? Maybe. But here’s hoping.
